Above politics

Some people say that art is above politics. How convenient. Then explain to me Picasso’s Guernica and Manet’s Execution of Emperor Maximilian. Trying to absolve oneself from the pangs of worldly concerns leaves ones imagination placid. Art is not complete with skill alone. Imagination and feeling is just as crucial. And one can’t feel without being affected.

Skill

An artist’s imagination is limited by his skill. No matter how fertile his imagination is, without the necessary skill, the artist cannot convey his imagination onto the canvas. That said, if an artist is superbly skilled in realism, he can paint just about anything at all, provided his imagination is not stunted.
